Family Law Unit Staff Attorney

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. seeks an attorney to work in its Fulton Domestic Relations Unit. The office is a work unit of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, located in downtown Atlanta. The unit includes a managing attorney, 3 staff attorneys and 2 paralegals.  The position is a full-time job with fringe benefits.


Attorneys in this unit represent low-income persons in a wide variety of family law problems, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed domestic relations caseload including divorce, separate maintenance, custody, juvenile court dependency, visitation, child support, alimony, contempt, legitimation, family violence protective orders, name change, birth certificate establishment, birth certificate amendment, domestication of foreign decrees, emancipation, QDROs, adoption, and temporary minor guardianship. Attorneys provide community education to low-income persons and are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations, and to provide support to various client organizations. They also regularly help staff the Family Law Information Center in the Fulton Superior Court.


Qualifications: Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. A Georgia bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with family law and poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons are preferred.


Terms: The salary for a licensed attorney is $50,000+, depending upon legal experience.
