Intake Receptionist/Secretary

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (Legal Aid) works to remove barriers to justice so that everyone can receive quality legal care, regardless of income. Through our 75 attorneys on staff, our self-help tools, and our pro bono program, we help our clients deal with some of life’s most basic needs. For nearly 100 years, we have been helping our clients to secure safe homes, have enough food to eat, get a decent education, be protected against fraud, and get legal protection against domestic violence. 


The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a professional Intake Receptionist/ Secretary to work in its DeKalb County Office.  The office is a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., and is located in downtown Decatur. Our non-profit represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters, including domestic relations, housing, consumer, public benefits, education, and health law.  

This position requires working from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  It is a hybrid position, with the employee’s time being divided as 90% intake receptionist and 10% secretary.

Responsibilities: The intake receptionist gathers information and determines eligibility of people who call or visit the office seeking legal assistance; verifies information accuracy; enters client information in our computer database; provides callers with information about other agencies and resources: works closely with and supports the intake specialists.  The volume of calls is very heavy, and callers are often very emotional.  Accordingly, the intake receptionist must have patience, compassion and good problem – solving skills. The secretary component of the position involves word processing and calling applicants and clients on behalf of the attorneys and paralegals to gather and provide information. The employee will also assist with scanning and mailing projects.



  • At least 2 years of office experience
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs
  • Excellent oral and professional written communication skills including spelling, grammar, and style
  • Attentive to detail
  • Organized
  • Able to multitask
  • Able to operate a multi-line telephone system
  • Proficient at data-entry and word processing, 
  • Enjoy working with the public
  • Even-tempered
  • Team player 
  • Knowledge of another language is a plus, but not required. 


Terms:  The salary for this position will start at $30,430 depending on experience.  Additional experience will result in a higher salary as determined by our salary scale. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including educational loan reimbursement up to $7200 per year (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); paid holidays, PTO, and paid parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; and a voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match.
