Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Paralegal for the General Law Unit, located in Downtown Atlanta. The General Law Unit provides advice and representation to persons in Fulton County in a variety of legal matters including tenant protection, benefits (income and healthcare), consumer protection, and public school education. The unit is currently staffed by a managing attorney, three staff attorneys, and one support paralegal. This unit also houses the Fulton County Tenant Hotline.
Responsibilities:
- Case intake and management, including answering the phone, conducting initial client intakes and interviews, gathering documentation, and presenting cases to the staff attorneys and at case acceptance meetings
- Data management, including entering case information into Legal Aid’s client database and retrieving data from various sources
- File management, including scanning documents into the client database, filing and archiving closed cases
- Providing clients with information and advice under the supervision of an attorney
- Assisting with document preparation and organization including trial binders
- Notarizing documents
- Interviewing, onboarding and training new staff, volunteers, interns and externs
- Drafting client stories
- General administrative tasks
Qualifications:
- An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, but not required
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, social workers, and staff
- Strong work ethic and adaptability
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication, listening, and organizational skills
- Patience, compassion, people skills and problem-solving skills are required
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model,
- Must be eager to learn and open to feedback
- Demonstrated commitment to public service and previous work with low-income people with an appreciation for diversity are strongly preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, with a willingness to learn additional software
- Proficiency in languages other than English, specifically Spanish, is highly valued
- A current Georgia notary public or eligible and willing to apply
Salary and Benefits:
- The salary is $50,000, depending on work experience. Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.
