DeKalb Intake Receptionist/Secretary

Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks an Intake Receptionist/Secretary to work in its DeKalb County office located in downtown Decatur. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income people in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. The staff is currently comprised of a managing attorney, 8 attorneys, 2 paralegals, and 2 support staff.

Responsibilities: The Intake Receptionist/Secretary answers the phone; greets visitors to the office; gathers basic information and determines the eligibility of people who call or visit the office seeking legal assistance; verifies information accuracy; enters information in our database; provides callers and visitors with information about our services, and other organizations and resources; performs word processing, scanning and mailing tasks; contacts applicants and clients on behalf of the attorneys and paralegals to gather and provide information. The volume of incoming calls is very heavy, and callers are often very emotional. Accordingly, the Intake Receptionist/Secretary must be patient, compassionate, even-tempered, and have good people and problem–solving skills.

Qualifications: Two years of office experience and fluency in English. Applicants must be able to operate a multi-line telephone system; proficient at data entry and word processing; and proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Applicants must also have excellent oral and written communication skills including spelling, grammar and style; be organized, attentive to details and able to multi-task; be a team player and enjoy working with the public. Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary is $33,500+ depending on experience. Salaries increase annually based on a salary scale. The program provides generous fringe benefits including 13 paid holidays, 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match. Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
