Director of Grants

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Director of Grants to work at its headquarters in downtown Atlanta. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters. Legal Aid currently has over 50 funding sources including United Way, private foundations, and federal, state, county and city grants.

Responsibilities: The Director of Grants reports to the Executive Director and directs the work of the grant team (an Associate Director of Grants and Education, a Grants Manager, and a part-time Development Fellow) in researching, writing, and editing grant applications; monitoring grants; submitting reports to grantors; and developing new government, corporation and foundation support. The Director of Grants also cultivates and maintains good working relationships with grantors, potential grantors and the Legal Aid staff.

The primary responsibilities of the Director include researching, developing, planning, writing and editing funding proposals; managing grants and ensuring grant compliance including calendaring application, re-application, and reporting deadlines; maintaining accurate records of funding sources; collecting and compiling financial, case and evaluation data; collaborating and coordinating with the Director of Finance, the Director of Annual Giving and Communications and other staff; training staff to ensure understanding of and compliance with the grant requirements, communicating with staff to gain an understanding of the work and to develop funding proposals; traveling throughout Legal Aid’s 5-county service area (Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton).

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree; five years of experience in developing, writing, and managing grants; and strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Salesforce, web-based research and database management are required. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, be detail oriented, able to set priorities and meet deadlines, be accountable for time and work product, be adaptable, able to work with and accept help from others, have an appreciation for diversity, and be willing to make a two-year employment commitment. Five to seven years of increased responsibility in grant application and maintenance; recent success in applying for and maintaining major public and private grants; experience in research, planning, and strategic thinking; and a demonstrated creativity for matching a program’s work with potential funding sources are strongly preferred. Experience managing Legal Services Corporation grants or other large federal grants is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary is $65,000+ depending on experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match. Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
