Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Family Law Unit located in its downtown Atlanta, Georgia office. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income people in a variety of legal matters including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law. The unit currently consists of an interim managing attorney, three staff attorneys, and two paralegals.
Responsibilities:
- Handling a variety of family law issues including divorce, separate maintenance, custody, visitation, child support, alimony, QDROs, contempt, protective orders, legitimation, name change, birth certificate establishment and amendment, guardianship, dependency, adoption, emancipation, and domestication of foreign decrees
- Utilizing a variety of methods including advice and referral, brief service, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation
- Providing community education and support to various client organizations
- Staffing family law consultations in the Fulton Justice Resource Center
- Participating in local and state bar and social service associations
Qualifications:
- Active member in good standing in the State Bar of Georgia (strongly preferred), or eligible to sit for the next Georgia Bar exam
- Strong work ethic and adaptability
- Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, listening, and organizational skill
- Ability to balance compassion and pragmatism
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model, with an appreciation for diversity
- Eagerness to learn and openness to feedback
- Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics or trial advocacy courses, familiarity with poverty law, and previous work with low-income people are strongly preferred
- Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued
Salary and Benefits:
- The salary is $61,000 for a new attorney who was recently admitted to the Georgia Bar and may be higher depending on relevant legal experience. The salary for a new attorney pending admission to the Georgia Bar is $56,000 and will be adjusted upon admission.
- Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.

- Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period
