Gwinnett Managing Attorney

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Managing Attorney for its Gwinnett County Office. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of legal matters including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law. In addition to direct client services, the office operates several projects, including the Gwinnett Family Violence Project, the Gwinnett Family Law Clinic, and the Gwinnett Pro Bono Project. The office is located in Lawrenceville, close to the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center. Our office lease expires later this year and we are exploring various potential locations.  The staff currently consists of two part-time interim managing attorneys, seven full-time attorneys, and seven support staff members.

Responsibilities: 

  • Overall management, quality and efficacy of the office
  • Distribution and supervision of the staff
  • Holding staff meetings, administering performance reviews, and fostering growth and professional development 
  • Working closely with Legal Aid’s management team to coordinate client services 
  • Serving as a primary representative of Legal Aid in the Gwinnett County community, maintaining relations with the local bar and bench, government, community organizations, and funding sources , and 
  • Handle an active caseload, although lower than the staff attorneys

Qualifications: 

  • Active member in good standing in the State Bar of Georgia (preferred, or active membership in another state bar and eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar exam
  • Minimum of seven years of experience litigating in various legal forums 
  • Minimum commitment of two years
  • Experience managing staff including supervising and mentoring attorneys 
  • Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, hybrid team model, with an appreciation for diversity
  • Previous experience working with low-income persons and knowledge of various civil practice areas are preferred.  
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.      
       

Salary and Benefits: 

  • The salary is $100,000, depending on experience and bar admission status. Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.
  • Generous fringe benefits, including 18 paid holidays in 2025, 6 weeks of paid time off (accruing at 2.5 days per month) in the first two years, and 6 weeks of parental leave (12 weeks after one year)

  • Salary reduction option for a flexible spending account 
  • Educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts;

  • State Bar of Georgia dues and CLE expenses 
  • Hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to the approval of management and a probationary employment period.  Managing attorneys are expected to have a greater presence in the office.
