The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. seeks a Paralegal to work in a newly established, grant funded Veterans Law Project located in its headquarters in Downtown Atlanta. The Project will provide free legal services to low-income and homeless veterans. The Project will be staffed by an attorney and a paralegal with the possibility of expansion depending on funding and need. Project staff will provide advice, brief services and referrals to veterans in a variety of legal matters including veteran’s benefits, public benefits, housing, employment, family, estate planning and access to support services. Project staff will work in partnership with Hope Atlanta.
Duties: The Veterans Law Project paralegal is responsible for screening clients and completing form questionnaires; tracking cases to ensure proper documentation is gathered for grant compliance, data entry and management, file management, including scanning documents into client database; filing and archiving closed cases; preparing reports for funders and attending scheduled site visits; maintaining the monthly intake and outreach schedule; drafting letters and assisting with document preparation, organization and requests; establishing logins for and training new staff, volunteers and interns on the case management system; maintaining volunteer contact information and case assignments, tracking and closing cases, providing litigation and non-litigation support to the attorney; and other paralegal tasks as needed. In addition to the above, the Veterans Law Project paralegal will provide clients with advice and information; help clients develop a plan to address barriers, increase income and maintain permanent housing; assists clients with public benefits applications; and make referrals for housing and other supportive services as needed.
Qualifications: One year of experience in social services including outreach in a nonprofit or comparable setting. An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, but not required. Candidates should possess strong advocacy skills, excellent communication (written and verbal) and listening skills, creative problem-solving skills, strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, data entry accuracy, and proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google software systems. The ability to work on a team and alone, adaptability, appreciation of diversity, the ability to maintain a non-judgmental attitude, and a demonstrated interest in or experience working with low-income persons and/or veterans are required. Previous experience with law office management software, knowledge of the needs of low-income, homeless and veteran populations, and a “whatever it takes” attitude are highly valued.
Terms: The salary for this position is $34,500+ depending upon experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); and a voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match.
