Veterans Law Project Managing Attorney

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Managing Attorney for its Veterans Law Project in Legal Aid’s downtown Atlanta officeFounded in 2022, the Veterans Law Project is an exciting opportunity to have an immediate and profound impact on the civil legal needs of veterans in the metro-Atlanta area. Last year, the Project obtained nearly $2 million in financial benefits for veterans and handled over 1100 cases. The project assists low-income and homeless veterans who have legal needs that create barriers to housing and economic stability. The project advocates on behalf of veterans to obtain live-sustaining income, health and housing benefits, restrict criminal and consumer records, upgrade military discharges, and prevent homelessness. Project staff support veterans through holistic legal services, as well as collaborations for supportive services with local law schools and courts, the VA hospital, and veteran services organizations. Currently, the project consists of an interim managing attorney, three staff attorneys, two paralegals and one part-time intake paralegal.

Responsibilities: 

  • Overall management, quality and efficacy of the Project team, including hiring, training, supervision, mentoring, and evaluating staff
  • Overseeing case assignment and the legal work 
  • Working closely with Legal Aid’s management team
  • Reviewing timekeeping and inspecting closed files to ensure grant compliance
  • Developing, communicating, and maintaining relationships with the local bar and bench, government, community partners and funders; and attending trainings with and providing training to community partners and funders
  • Developing and supervising pro bono clinics and clinics at VA facilities 
  • Leading the project’s strategic planning efforts
  • Serving as a Legal Aid designee for major funders, conducting funder site visits, and supervising the preparation of quarterly and annual grant reports 
  • Reviewing and responding to client grievances 
  • Handling a small caseload, performing client intakes, and participating in community education and outreach.

Qualifications: 

  • Active member in good standing in the State Bar of Georgia
  • Minimum of five years of experience litigating in various legal forums 
  • VA accredited or able to obtain VA accreditation within the first six (6) months of employment
  • Experience managing staff including supervising and mentoring attorneys 
  • Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, hybrid team model, with an appreciation for diversity
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest and public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses are preferred
  • Previous experience working with low-income persons and/or people with serious health conditions, and knowledge of health and poverty law are preferred
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.  
           

Salary and Benefits: 

  • The salary is $81,000, depending on experience. Salaries are reviewed and adjusted annually, depending on funding.
  • Generous fringe benefits, including 18 paid holidays in 2025, 6 weeks of paid time off (accruing at 2.5 days per month) in the first two years, and 6 weeks of parental leave (12 weeks after one year)

  • Educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts;

  • Hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to the approval of management and a probationary employment period.  Managing attorneys are expected to have a greater presence in the office.
