The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a litigation paralegal to work in its Fulton County Domestic Relations Unit, assisting low-income persons in a variety of civil legal problems. The office is a work unit of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, located in downtown Atlanta. The unit, which includes our Kinship Care Project, includes 2 managing attorneys, 5 staff attorneys and 3 paralegals. Highest priorities of the unit include intervention in domestic abuse and establishing child custody and support.
Job responsibilities include screening new clients, referring clients to the appropriate attorney or resource, conducting factual investigations, counseling victims of domestic abuse, corresponding with clients, maintaining client files, assisting with discovery, pleadings, service, trial and hearing preparations, service of process, clerical work, community outreach, and assisting with advising clients on legal rights and procedures under the direction of an attorney.
Qualifications: Effective communication with clients and colleagues, a constructive attitude towards supervision, patience, adaptability, ability to work in a team, and appreciation of diversity are also required. Prior legal experience and proficiency with Windows are strongly preferred.
Terms: The starting salary range for this full-time position is $31,500-36,500 depending on experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, sick, and paid parental leave; health, life, and long and short term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts) and voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match.
