Summer Legal Internship 2026

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) invites first and second-year law students to apply for internships for Summer 2026. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income people in five metropolitan Atlanta counties in a variety of civil legal matters, including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education, and health law.

Work Experience:

  • Interns are partnered with Legal Aid staff attorneys for hands-on experience of civil legal practice.
  • Interns perform legal research and writing, assist with client interactions and litigation preparation, and have the opportunity to attend court and administrative proceedings.
  • Many interns have their own caseloads, participate in decision-making about cases, and handle cases from start to finish under the supervision of a staff attorney. Interns may represent clients in court if certified under the Georgia Student Practice Act.

Training and Mentorship:

  • Each intern receives program orientation, a primary supervisor (with ongoing responsibility for on-the-job training and mentoring), and opportunities to work with other attorneys in their assigned unit.
  • Interns may use the summer to build long-term mentor-mentee relationships, including advice and assistance in applying and preparing for fellowships, clerkships, and other public interest positions.
  • Many of our staff attorneys interned with Legal Aid or other civil legal aid programs when they were law students.

Funding and Time Commitment:

  • Legal Aid provides a limited number of stipends for the summer internship program.
  • Applicants are also encouraged to seek stipends or other funding from law schools or other sources.
  • Interns receiving stipends, funding, or school credit are expected to work full-time for 10 weeks. Interns not receiving stipends, funding, or school credit are expected to work full-time for at least 6 weeks, or part-time (20+ hours per week) for 10 weeks.
  • Internship term begins in late May and ends in late July/early August. Flexibility is available around interns’ school schedules and OCI.

Application Requirements:

  • Submit a letter of interest, resume, writing sample (advice letter, legal memorandum or brief) which demonstrates your ability to research and analyze legal issues, official law school transcript (a copy is acceptable pending your order of an official transcript), and the names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of two academic or professional references (preferably individuals who have supervised or managed your work) as one (1) PDF, using our online application system at atlantalegalaid.org/jobs.
  • Funding applications will be provided to students with job offers. We are happy to support students’ applications for stipends/funding from law schools and other entities.
  • Applications will be reviewed, and offers will be made on a rolling basis until all positions for Summer 2026 are filled.
  • For technical difficulties in submitting your application, please email [email protected].
  • Your application will be acknowledged. No phone calls, please.
