Clayton and South Fulton (Southside) Managing Attorney

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. seeks a Managing Attorney for its Clayton and South Fulton Office. The office, also known as “The Southside Office,” is a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid, a 75-lawyer non-profit law firm in the 5-county metropolitan Atlanta area. The office is located in Atlanta, South Fulton County, steps away from East Point off of I-85 South. The staff is comprised of a managing attorney, 7 full-time attorneys, two part-time attorneys, a pro bono coordinator, a housing navigator and four support staff. Attorneys in the Clayton and South Fulton office represent low-income persons in Clayton and South Fulton counties in a wide variety of civil law matters, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed caseload, including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law issues. Attorneys are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations.

Duties: The Managing Attorney is responsible for the overall management, quality and efficacy of the office. They supervise the legal work of all unit staff, hold staff meetings, administer performance reviews, distribute work, and foster growth and professional development. The Managing Attorney serves as a primary representative of Legal Aid in the Clayton County legal community, and maintains relations with the local bar and bench, government, community organizations, and funding sources. The Managing Attorney works closely with the management team to coordinate client services. The Managing Attorney is also expected to handle an active caseload.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate possesses experience managing a work unit as well as supervising and mentoring attorneys; excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills; excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; the ability to work in and value a collaborative team model; and an appreciation of diversity. A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next Georgia bar exam is required, as is a minimum of five years of legal experience litigating in various legal forums. Qualifications preferred include previous work with low-income persons, and knowledge in various civil practice areas. Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary is $65,100+ depending on experience, plus a $4,000 annual manager stipend. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts), voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; CLE expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.
