Georgia Senior Legal Aid Paralegal

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a paralegal for its Georgia Senior Legal Aid unit (GSLA) (formerly known as the Georgia Senior Legal Hotline) located in Downtown Atlanta. Our nonprofit represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. GSLA provides legal advice, brief service, and referrals to Georgians over 60. GSLA is comprised of a managing attorney, five attorneys, two paralegals, and multiple volunteers.

Responsibilities: The GSLA paralegal gathers personal information and determines the eligibility of callers seeking legal assistance; verifies information accuracy; enters information in our database; provides information about our services; performs word processing, scanning and mailing tasks; ensures compliance with grant and funding requirements; and performs other administrative tasks as needed. In addition, the GSLA paralegal helps guide callers to other resources and other organizations to help meet their housing and other basic needs.  The volume of calls is very heavy, and callers are often very emotional. Accordingly, the GSLA paralegal must be patient, compassionate, even-tempered, and have good people and problem–solving skills.

Qualifications:  Candidates must be fluent in English, have excellent oral and written communication skills including spelling, grammar and style; proficient at data entry and word processing; proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; be organized, attentive to details and able to multi-task; be a team player and enjoy working with the public. Proficiency in Spanish is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary is $31,500+ depending on experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); and a voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match. Legal Aid also offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
