Gwinnett County Staff Attorney

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Gwinnett County office. The office is located in Lawrenceville. The staff is comprised of a managing attorney, five full-time attorneys, two part-time attorneys, a pro bono coordinator, four paralegals, a housing navigator, and three support staff.

Attorneys represent low-income persons in Gwinnett county in a wide variety of civil law matters, using a variety of methods including community education, advice and referral, brief service, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. Attorneys handle a mixed caseload including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education issues. In addition to casework, attorneys screen potential clients and as experience is acquired, supervise the work of support staff and interns/externs, prepare and conduct community education sessions, and prepare and conduct trainings for staff and volunteers. Attorneys are also encouraged to participate in task forces, committees, social service organizations, and local bar associations.

Qualifications: A Georgia bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills, and litigation experience or the potential to be a good litigator. Good communication skills, the ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, prior work with low-income people, participation in law school clinics or trial advocacy courses, and bilingual Spanish-English are strongly preferred.

Terms: The salary for a licensed attorney is $55,000+ depending on experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues; and CLE expenses.
