Southside Staff Attorney

The Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Clayton and South Fulton County office. The office, also known as “The Southside Office,” is a branch of Atlanta Legal Aid, an 80-lawyer non-profit law firm in the 5-county metropolitan Atlanta area. The office is located in Atlanta, South Fulton County, steps away from East Point off of I-85 South. The staff is comprised of a managing attorney, 6 full-time attorneys, two part-time attorneys, a pro bono coordinator, a housing navigator and four support staff.

Attorneys in the Clayton and South Fulton office represent low-income persons in Clayton and South Fulton counties in a wide variety of civil law matters, using a variety of methods, including community education, brief service, advice and referral, transactional work, negotiation, mediation, and litigation. The attorneys handle a mixed caseload, including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law issues. Attorneys are encouraged to participate in local bar and social service associations.

Qualifications: A Georgia bar license or eligibility to sit for the next exam is required. Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy, and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work in a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. The ability to balance compassion and pragmatism in representing low-income clients is necessary. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, experience with domestic relations cases, and previous work with low-income people, are strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish is highly valued.

Terms: The salary for a licensed attorney is $55,000+ depending on experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off including parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues; and CLE expenses.
