Centralized Intake Unit Managing Attorney

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Managing Attorney to lead our Centralized Intake Unit as it expands the work of our Brief Services Unit. A newly created unit, the Centralized Intake Unit will provide advice and brief services to clients in housing, family, consumer, public benefits, and general poverty related law through a single point of entry.

Responsibilities: The managing attorney is responsible for the overall development, management, quality, and efficacy of the Centralized Intake Unit. The managing attorney is also responsible for creating a work plan, creating workflows within the case management system, and hiring staff as needed. The managing attorney will distribute and supervise the work of attorney and paralegal staff, hold staff meetings, administer performance reviews, and foster growth and professional development. The managing attorney will work closely with Legal Aid’s Deputy Director, Director of Advocacy, and Director of Pro Bono to develop the unit and guide it through a full launch; will work with the outreach coordinator and fellow managing attorneys to coordinate client services, priorities, and referrals; and will work with the innovation and technology team to ensure LegalServer (the case management system), call center functions, and other technology needs are met for the unit. The managing attorney is expected to stay up to date with trends in each county the program serves in order to ensure clients receive accurate information. The managing attorney will also maintain a limited caseload providing advice and brief service in all of the areas of law handled by the unit.

Additionally, the managing attorney is expected to expand and manage the Brief Services Unit until the Centralized Intake Unit fully launches at the end of 2024. The Brief Services Unit consists of 3 attorneys and 4 paralegals. In this capacity, the manager is expected to complete the responsibilities listed above.

Qualifications: A Georgia bar license or eligibility for the next Georgia bar exam is required and a minimum of five years of litigation experience is strongly preferred. Applicants must possess experience managing staff including supervising and mentoring attorneys and paralegals; excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills; excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; the ability to work in a collaborative, hybrid team model; and an appreciation of diversity. Applicants must be innovative, creative problem solvers who are motivated to help guide the unit and program at large through a reorganization of the way Legal Aid delivers legal services to our clients. Applicants should be self-starters with an eye toward customer service and a client-centered experience. Prior experience starting new units and projects, a demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, previous work with low-income people and knowledge of poverty law are preferred. Proficiency in languages other than English is highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary for five years of legal experience is $65,100 plus a $4,000 annual manager stipend. (The salary offered may increase or decrease depending on the actual, relevant experience of the selected candidate.) Salaries currently increase annually based on a salary scale. We recently engaged a compensation consultant to review our current structure and make recommendations for improvement. The program provides generous fringe benefits including 18 paid holidays (in 2024), 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health (including optional dental and vision coverage), life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to the approval of management and a probationary employment period. This position may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the U.S. Department of Education.

Application Requirements: Submit a letter of interest; resume; writing sample (advice letter, legal memorandum or brief); official law school transcript (a copy is acceptable pending your order of an official transcript); and the names, phone numbers and email addresses of three professional references (preferably individuals who have supervised or managed your work) as one (1) PDF using our online application system at atlantalegalaid.org/jobs.
