Senior Citizens Law Project Staff Attorney

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Senior Citizens Law Project (“SCLP”) located in downtown Atlanta. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income people in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law. Since 1975 SCLP has been representing seniors (60 years of age and older) in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton counties. SCLP aims to improve the health and financial stability of seniors. The staff currently consists of a managing attorney, two staff attorneys, and two paralegals.

Responsibilities: The Staff Attorney performs intake and provides referrals, advice, brief service, or representation in a variety of civil legal matters affecting seniors prioritizing public benefits, home defense, probate, long-term care, elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, and consumer law. The Staff attorney also performs outreach and community education and works collaboratively with attorneys in Georgia Senior Legal Aid and the Home Defense Program.

Qualifications: A Georgia bar license is required and three (3) or more years of relevant legal experience is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills and a strong work ethic. Communication and listening skills, the ability to work on a team and alone, adaptability, eagerness to learn and openness to evaluation, and an appreciation of diversity are required. A demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, previous work with seniors and/or low-income people, and knowledge of elder and poverty law issues are preferred. Proficiency in languages other than English and a willingness to improve language skills are highly valued.

Salary and Benefits: The salary for 3 years of legal experience is $59,600. (The salary offered may increase or decrease depending on the actual, relevant experience of the selected candidate.) Salaries increase annually based on a salary scale. The program provides generous fringe benefits including 13 paid holidays, 6 weeks paid time off, 6 weeks parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); voluntary tax-sheltered annuity with 3% match; Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. Legal Aid offers a hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
